WHAT WALAA WANTS + Q&A
2018 | Christy Garland | 90’

Monday 18th November | 6:30pm
CURZON SOHO, SHAFTESBURY AVENUE, W1D 5DY

Born and raised in the West Bank's Balata refugee camp, Walaa has her mind set on becoming one of the few women on the Palestinian Security Forces. This is a choice that puts her at odds with her family, particularly while her mother is still serving her sentence in an Israeli prison. Canadian documentary filmmaker Christy Garland offers rare insight into the female choices, roles and spaces in the Palestine security systems. Shot over five years, this coming-of-age story sees Walaa shape out of her troubled teens and into a more determined and focused adulthood, negotiating the contradictions she is faced with and the negative predictions of her surroundings.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Toronto-based director, Christy Garland.
