LAND OF CANAAN

Returning to his West Bank village, Nasser Abufarha finds farmers abandoning ancient olive groves. He builds a movement to protect their land, preserving the ecosystem and thousands of years of ecological knowledge.
The son of a watermelon farmer, Nasser Abufarha returned from America in 2003. Farmers face threats to their traditional practices and centuries-old farming knowledge from exploitative middlemen, global agribusiness, the Occupation and expanding settlements. Land of Canaan reveals the farmers’ deep relationship with the land and trees, telling a nuanced story of love and connection to place, while following Abufarha as he develops new ways of organising socially and economically around the land and the communities who depend on it.
This screening is organised by Screen with no Borders - Meet the World through Food and Film - bringing together communities in Sussex and beyond to connect, engage and immerse themselves in the stories, people, landscapes and cultures of Global Majority countries. We create nourishing evenings with film, food and open conversations to explore themes such as justice, migration, love, memory and identity, through a shared curiosity for our rich and diverse world.
Land of Canaan is screening as part of the ‘Palestine on Film’ season. In the spirit of honouring the land and the environment, join us for a hearty bowl of Palestinian food. Food is served by Soraya at Taarof, a local chef and caterer who uses her mixed heritage food as a conduit for bringing people together to create a culturally enriched community.
Film screening with short introduction starts at — 7:30pm
Post screening conversation — 9:30pm - 10:15pm
