SOUNDTRACK TO THE PALESTINIAN REVOLUTION:
A PRESENTATION ON SOUND, MUSIC AND CINEMA

SUNDAY 21 NOVEMBER | 18:20
ica: THE MALL, ST. JAMES'S, SW1Y 5AH

This exclusive event will look at and listen to the sounds of cinema that exemplify the film, music and revolution of 1968 to 1982 Palestine. Lead by Berlin-based sound archivist and academic, Bashar Shammout, the discussion will pinpoint various types of song and innovation that were part of a new mobilising aesthetic. These include the important role of folk songs, their historical relevance and how they were appropriated towards nationalist filmmaking in the spirit of the revolution. But also, the experimentation with film scores and their deliberate aim to revolutionise the imagination. Just as they did in the creation of the Palestine Film Unit, the PLO also put support and effort into creating and preserving Palestinian musical heritage in an effort to protect the country’s narrative and propagate an essence of self-determination. The discussion will be chaired by researcher and archivist, Hazem Jamjoum.

Presented specially for the London Palestine Film Festival, Shammout promises a dynamic live show-and-tell presentation of films and record samplings from the era that exemplifies the keen political and creative explosion of sound design.
