The Native and the Refugee is multi-media project profiling the spaces of the Indian reservations across North America and Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon. These are spaces of exception whose position in the struggle for Native American and Palestinian autonomy are essential. This event presents an exclusive live round-table discussion on the dynamics of settlements; occupation and colonisation; the changing status of the refugee in today’s political agenda; xenophobia and nationalism; ideas on statehood; and more. The discussion will be punctuated by short films produced by Matt Peterson and Malek Rasamny, here from the United States and Lebanon respectively, to lead the discussion.

In speaking about spaces of exception and statelessness, the LPFF has invited speakers from other regions with comparable struggles to present their work:

Dilar Dirik is an activist of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in Europe. Currently, she is a Research Fellow at the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford. Her work focuses on women's struggles and stateless self-determination in Kurdistan
Mirza Saaib Bég is a Kashmiri lawyer. He has been working, within academic and activist spaces, on various legal and political issues around Kashmir to create awareness and understanding of the issues involved by conducting workshops, seminars and public events around India.
Sidi Breika is a representative from Polisario Front, Western Sahara, in the UK.

Chair: Dr. Mezna Qato is a Research Fellow in History of the Middle East at King’s College, Cambridge. She was co-editor of a special issue of Settler Colonial Studies on Palestine, and is completing a book on the history of education for Palestinians.
